Common Questions about
Mental Heath Services

What should I expect from therapy?

Psychotherapy very often results in significant relief from mental health problems, such as feelings of anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflicts. However, psychotherapy is a process that begins with carefully assessing the presenting issues to identify the steps toward resolving key issues. This assessment process can take one to several visits depending on the complexity of the consumer’s problem areas. While many of the psychotherapy interventions take place in the session, the consumer often is encouraged to practice new skills and possibly to complete other assignments outside of the therapy session. As the consumer progresses through the treatment process, the therapist and consumer discuss any gains or setbacks and revise the treatment process accordingly. Once the consumer has achieved the goals of treatment, they discuss possibly ending services based on the needs and desires of the consumer.

Who attends therapy?

Participation in psychotherapy is best when the consumer has mental health or behavioral issues he or she wants to address in themselves or with their relationships with significant people in their lives. While a diagnosable psychiatric illness may be required for billing the cost of services to many insurance plans, many people who want to improve their relationships with their spouses or children or who generally want to improve their satisfaction with their lives benefit greatly by participating in psychotherapy services.

How long do the sessions last?

Sessions generally last about 50 minutes for individual psychotherapy; however, some providers may schedule shorter or longer sessions based on the consumer’s needs. Group and family therapy sessions often are scheduled for a longer period of time, such as 1.5 to 2 hours to allow sufficient time for all consumers attending the session to participate fully.

How often do I need to attend?

Sessions typically are scheduled every week to every-other week for treatment to be effective. This frequency of contact allows the consumer to put forth sustained effort from session to session without losing therapeutic momentum. However, sessions may be scheduled less frequently for consumers who are in the process of concluding their treatment or for consumers who have the ability to work on their issues over a longer period of time by completing homework assignments.

How long does therapy typically last?

Mental health treatment generally lasts several months to several years depending on the complexity of the issues the consumer wants to address.

Do you accept insurances and if so, how does that typically work?

Yes, we accept many forms of insurance for our services and will gather the necessary information from you and submit claims. You will be expected to pay any deductible and/or co-pay fees.
